Crabby and Fishy

Since we live near the beach and it’s summer, I have been having fun making appliqued sea creature wall hangings.  I found this baby quilt book (Quilts, Bibs, Blankies …  Oh My! by Kim Schaefer) that had really cute sea creatures to use to make a quilt.  First I made the polka dot fish which I called “Fishy Fishy”.  It was so cute that I had to make a crab too which I called “Crabby”.    I looked at photos of crabs on the internet to get ideas to quilt the body of the crab.  I had fun using free motion quilting the design for the body.

Say hello to Fishy Fishy.

That’s Crabby.

Ribbons!!!

Quilters by the Sea Guild had their annual quilt show this weekend.  I entered 2 wall hangings with an ocean theme.  These two quilts were hanging in the Fort Fisher aquarium show for a few months earlier this spring.  Mary and I went to the reception on Thursday night to view the quilts and see the winning quilts.  Very inspiring to see the beautiful quilts.  I need to finish some more UFO’s so I can enter more quilts next year. It was the first time I entered quilts in a show.  I was very excited to see that both of my quilts won ribbons – 2nd and 3rd place.  My boss won a Judge’s Choice ribbon for her owl quilt.  Another friend from the shop won several ribbons for her quilts.  It was a fun evening with refreshments – yum!

“Under the Caribbean Sea”

“Out to Sea”

“Under the Caribbean Sea” – I painted the ocean scene using fabric dyes and resist on silk fabric.  Then I quilted the scene.  I learned this painting technique from a workshop from Deborah Younglao.  Check out her website to see her beautiful tropical inspired quilts.

“Out to Sea” – This quilt was done with machine applique and piecing.  I chose fabrics so that I could show the turtle heading to the ocean after hatching in the dunes.  One night about 15 years ago, I was able to watch about 120 loggerhead turtles hatch from their nest and make their way to the ocean.  It was truly an amazing sight.
