Quilters by the Sea Guild had their annual quilt show this weekend. I entered 2 wall hangings with an ocean theme. These two quilts were hanging in the Fort Fisher aquarium show for a few months earlier this spring. Mary and I went to the reception on Thursday night to view the quilts and see the winning quilts. Very inspiring to see the beautiful quilts. I need to finish some more UFO’s so I can enter more quilts next year. It was the first time I entered quilts in a show. I was very excited to see that both of my quilts won ribbons – 2nd and 3rd place. My boss won a Judge’s Choice ribbon for her owl quilt. Another friend from the shop won several ribbons for her quilts. It was a fun evening with refreshments – yum!
“Under the Caribbean Sea” – I painted the ocean scene using fabric dyes and resist on silk fabric. Then I quilted the scene. I learned this painting technique from a workshop from Deborah Younglao. Check out her website to see her beautiful tropical inspired quilts.
“Out to Sea” – This quilt was done with machine applique and piecing. I chose fabrics so that I could show the turtle heading to the ocean after hatching in the dunes. One night about 15 years ago, I was able to watch about 120 loggerhead turtles hatch from their nest and make their way to the ocean. It was truly an amazing sight.
